John 15:9-17 / 6 Easter / 25 May 2003 Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
Love. We toss the word around so carelessly, thoughtlessly. We talk about falling in love, being in love. We say, “I love you,” but what does that mean? Is it a feeling, a fact? We say we love God, but what exactly does that mean? The word “love” seems inadequate, not quite up to the task.

John 10:11-18 / 5 Easter B / 18 May 2003 I am the Vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)
Jesus the vine; we the branches. He the source of life, we the ones who live in Him. The image takes us out to wine country, to the rolling vineyards lush with grape vines. Fruitful branches thick with grapes growing on an old, gnarled vine with roots that reach deep into the ground. Jesus is that true vine, the only vine planted by God. His roots go deep down into Israelite soil and God’s covenant promise to David, to Isarel, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, all the way back to Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden, the place our origin.

John 10:11-18 / 4 Easter B / 11 May 2003 I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:16
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday on the liturgical calendar. Traditionally it was the third Sunday of Easter, which would have been last week. Don’t ask me how or why it was changed. The Latin name for the Sunday was Misercordias Domini, which has a nice ring to it even if you don’t understand a lick of Latin. The merciful heart of the Lord. And there is probably no greater picture of the merciful heart of the Lord than the picture of the Good Shepherd carrying the wayward sheep on His shoulders.

Luke 24:36-49 / 3 Easter B / 4 May 2003 “Thus it is written: That the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance unto forgiveness of sins be preached in His name to all nations.” (Luke 24:47)
How do you know something is true? That’s a big question these days, when truth seems to have taken on the consistency of Jello. Some people think the only way to the truth is science. That’s why the phrase “studies have shown” is so compelling. Even if you never see the data, you assume that it’s true, because studies have shown it to be true. Studies have shown that eggs are bad for you. Later studies have shown that eggs weren’t so bad, and some studies suggest that eggs might even be good for you.
